A First Look: St. Gregory Church Leadership Tours the Armenian Heritage Walk Mock-Up

ree

On Tuesday evening, August 12, the Very Rev. Fr. Boghos Tinkjian along with members of the St. Gregory the Illuminator Apostolic Church Board of Trustee and National Representative Assembly (NRA) delegates had the unique opportunity to experience a presentation of the Armenian Heritage Walk by its design team. The gathering took place on the campus of the Armenian Sisters Academy (ASA), where both vision and history came together in a special preview.

A Walkway Rooted in Heritage

One of the most meaningful highlights of the presentation was the introduction of the boulders and pavers, specially brought from Armenia. These materials will serve as a central feature in the landscaping of the Armenian Heritage Walk, creating a direct and tangible connection to the homeland. For now, they are being carefully stored on the ASA campus until installation begins in October.

Experiencing the Mock-Up

The evening also included a tour of the full-scale mock-up, a 15-foot-long section of the planned 7-foot-wide walkway. This demonstration allowed the Board and delegates to see firsthand the craftsmanship and thoughtful details of the project.

Among the unique features of the walkway are illuminated curbs. The lighting system is capable of showcasing multiple colors, and while the mock-up currently features white lights, the design team invited attendees to imagine the Armenian tri-color illuminating the path during evening hours, a powerful and symbolic vision.

A Moment of Participation

Following the presentation, Hayr Soorp and the participants were invited to sign a paver, marking their personal connection to the project and its unfolding history. Their gratitude was extended to the Armenian Heritage Foundation of Philadelphia, represented by Kurk Selverian, along with architects Simon Koumjian III and Ned Moore, who guided the presentation.

Community Collaboration

The evening concluded with the Board’s monthly meeting, graciously hosted in the ASA cafeteria. Appreciation was expressed to the Academy for providing the space and for supporting this important milestone in the Armenian Heritage Walk’s journey.

This event marked not just a preview of a walkway, but a glimpse into how Armenian heritage will be honored and experienced for generations to come.

This project has been made possible thanks to the generous support we’ve received so far.
